Germany defeated Portugal 1-0
 in the opening round of Euro 2012 group matches in the Ukraine Saturday, with a goal in the 72nd minute by Mario Gomez enough to secure victory for one of the tournament favorites.

The teams play again on Wednesday, when Germany will face the Netherlands and Portugal plays Denmark. Earlier Saturday, Denmark beat the much-fancied Netherlands team 1-0. The top two teams from the group will qualify for the knockout stages.
